Trajan celebrated his first victory as emperor in 105 CE. He conquered Dacia, which is where modern-day Romania is. People like to celebrate when they achieve a goal, and Trajan celebrated his victory over Dacia by hosting gladiator games. Gladiators – as you’ll remember – are soldiers who fight to entertain people, and they were one of the favorite forms of entertainment in Ancient Rome. They didn't have television or read many books, so the Ancient Romans watched gladiator fights. Trajan probably held his celebration in the Colosseum – a big arena built a few years earlier for celebrations like this.
